Equine Vaccination
ADULTS
1. Intervet 5-Way (eastern and western encephalitis, tetanus toxoid, influenza and rhinopneumonitis): Vaccinate yearly.
2. PreveNile (west nile virus): Vaccinate yearly.
3. Imrab (rabies): Vaccinate every other year (recent studies have shown this to be protective).
FOALS
1. 5-Way, Rabies, and West Nile: Vaccinate at 4-6 months of age.
2. Booster 5-Way and Rabies in 3-4 weeks. If using PreveNile, no need for booster.
3. Calvenza (influenza and rhinopneumonitis): Vaccinate between 9-11 months of age.
BROOD MARES
1. Current vaccines (as for adults above) before breeding.
2. Prodigy (a killed rhinopneumonitis vaccine) at 3rd, 5th 7th, and 9th month of pregnancy. This virus is one of the most common causes of abortion in mares.
3. Intervet 4-Way (eastern and western encephalitis, tetanus toxoid and influenza), west nile and rabies: Booster vaccines 1 month before foaling to increase protective antibodies in colostrum (mare's first milk).
OPTIONAL: For at risk horses
1. Cal Venza (Influenza/Rhinopneumonitis): booster 6 months after 5 way. Especially helpful in boarding horses and/or show barns and young horses.
2. Influenza Flu Avertü (modified live intranasal vaccine for influenza): Useful in providing enhanced immunity for horses with high exposure and can help prevent disease or decrease severity of illness when a booster is given in the face of an influenza outbreak. Do not give to pregnant mares.
3. Pinnacle IN Strangles (modified live internasal vaccine for Strep Equi) should be given to at risk horses before exposure. Horses need an initial dose with a booster in 2-3 weeks and afterwards annual vaccination. Do not give to pregnant mares.
